Fob Not Working?
Tell us the year, make and model and what the fob is doing, or not doing. Sometimes the fix is smaller than you think.

A key fob talks to your vehicle by radio. Before a new fob will lock, unlock or start the car, the vehicle has to learn it, and that pairing is what programming means. On many vehicles it takes diagnostic equipment plugged into the car, which is why a fob bought online does nothing until someone programs it.
Fob work is one part of what our car locksmith service covers, and it comes in three kinds:
If the key is a traditional chip key with no remote buttons, our car key replacement page covers it.
A dead battery is the most common cause of a fob that stops working, especially after a cold snap.
Cold-weather fob trouble
Fob batteries are small, and cold weather saps them. On a frosty morning in North Carson or up in Timberline, a weak battery can mean the doors will not unlock from a few feet away, or a push-to-start car will not see the fob at all. Plenty of drivers assume the fob is broken when it simply needs a new battery.
When a new battery does not fix it, the fob may have lost its pairing, the case may be cracked, or the buttons may be worn out. We test it at the car and tell you whether reprogramming or a replacement is the answer, so you only pay for what actually fixes the problem.
Range drops first. Then buttons fail. Then the car will not start.
Some fobs need to be paired again after a battery change or a repair.
A dropped fob can often be rehoused instead of replaced.
Most smart keys hide a metal blade for the door when the battery dies.

FAQ
If the range has been shrinking and the buttons work only up close, it is usually the battery. If a fresh battery changes nothing, or the case is cracked, the fob may need reprogramming or replacing. We can test it at the car.
Sometimes. Fobs bought online are often the wrong frequency or already locked to another vehicle, and those cannot be used. Call us first with the part details and we will tell you if it is likely to work.
Most smart keys hide a metal blade that opens the driver door. Many vehicles then let you start the car by holding the dead fob against the start button. Check your owner’s manual, or call us and we will talk you through it.
Yes. Adding a fob while you still have a working one is one of the most common jobs we do, and it is usually simpler than replacing a lost one.
On many vehicles we can remove fobs that are no longer in your possession when we program the new one. Ask when you call and we will confirm for your vehicle.
